Why are you unemployed ?
Based on the Star newspaper, Friday 14 August 2009, and according to International Trade and Industry Deputy Minister Datuk Mukhriz Tun Mahathir, the unemployment rate may increase to 4.5 per cent by this year-end compared to 3.7 per cent last year. Malaysia has a working population of about 11 million people; that means there are more than half a million jobless people.
According to the Human Resources Ministry website, there are 69,760 Malaysian graduates had registered with the public jobsMalaysia this year; and this number does not give the exact figure of the unemployed graduates, it could be more and could be less. The internet is full of articles and thoughts regarding this issue. There are few who blame the economy, however, I would not agree on that. The economic crisis had affected the employment rate, but that has nothing to do with employing you. The newspapers are full of job vacancies of all types, and companies are still employing people, but not you.
I will not emphasize in this article on some of the contributing factors to this issue, which have been discussed by many; economy, education system and quality, and globalization. I will leave that to the experts in these fields and to the government, who is working and giving its contribution to solve this issue through providing ideas, training programs, and jobs opportunities to the unemployed in general.
I will focus on the factors that you can change and make your contribution to solve this issue and in order to get the job you want. I am not putting the blame solely on you. Many factors had contributed in forming your personality, knowledge, skills, and attitude since you were born that brought you to this stage. However, you can change these attributes. Let us discuss the factors that you can change.
(Check your skills)
First, if you think that because you have graduated from a college or a university you will have a job, you are most likely wrong. This kind of thinking no longer fit reality; the world has changed and its continuous unpredictable rapid change is reality, and it is a permanent state. The reality is that getting a job today requires more than academic qualifications and a good resume. These qualifications, good resume, and even years of experience will get you the interview, but they will not guarantee you of getting and maintaining the job.
Today, getting and keeping a job require different type of skills. These skills include interpersonal skills, personal habits, effective communication, creativity, analytical thinking, diplomacy, flexibility, coping with change, problem solving, leadership, participating in teamwork, and the ability to build relationship with different personalities. Those people, who have these qualities are whom any organization would look for, hire, keep, provide with distinct treatment and care, and give them irresistible pay.
Regarding this issue, Stanford Research Institute, Harvard University, and the Carnegie Foundation, after spending one million dollars and five years in a research, proved that 85 percent of the reason that a person gets a job, keeps that job and move a head in that job has to do with an individual’s soft skills, people skills and people knowledge.
Another skill under the same point is your English language proficiency. English becomes more and more important in today’s market. Many of our local organizations nowadays require it as a primary condition for getting a job, since it is the language that is globally used in intercommunication, documents, and prose.
Secondly, you have to understand that human jobs are reducing rapidly. We live in the twenty-first century. This century is of a continuous rapid explosion of technologies’ inventions and implementations that make the challenges we face today very different from those that had been before. It is the century of machines, computers, and electronics where many human jobs have been vanishing, and no industry is exceptional.
Computer software - for example - can do the job of ten accountants in a shorter time. The ATM machines can do the job of many tellers, and the automatic answering machines are eliminating the telephone operators. In other words, in the near future, unless you are an irreplaceable person, you will probably be replaced by an RM 1000 microprocessor.
(Do not be so fussy and choosy)
A friend of mine, who is the owner of (Samudra Bermata Biru Sdn.Bhd.), told me that he had advertised for three weeks in the local newspapers looking for a graphic designer and no one turned up. He added that the salary for that job is up to RM 1500.
Now, many graphic designers and IT graduates are still moaning and groaning of being jobless. I wonder why these people did not show up. Is it that they did not see the advertisement in the paper? You are unemployed and you suppose to make looking and searching for a job your primary job!
Is it because the work place is in Donggongon and you live in Likas; too far?! Is it because the job does not have the title ‘Manager’? I believe that the majority of us want that title. However, it is not a matter of wanting, but a matter of deserving.
Is it because the pay is not up to what you expect? Do not you think that eating even ‘Nasi Kosong’ better than starving?
How long you want to remain asking your parents to reload your mobile or give you money in order to hang out with your friends. How long you want your parents, who have done their duty towards you, to be responsible and supporting you?
Why do not you accept a job that is related to your qualification and interest and start working even with a low pay in order to learn and gain experience? Do not you think that is better than depending on your parents?
You have to start making a change progress and contribute to solve your problem, and you must actually get started. I would like to end this article by sharing with you Bill Gate’s advice.
“1: Life is not fair - get used to it!
2: The world will not care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.
3: You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You will not be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.
4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait until you get a boss.
5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.
6: If you mess up it is not your parents' fault, so do not whine about your mistakes, learn from them.
7: Before you were born, your parents were not as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes, and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.
8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they will give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This does not bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.
9: Life is not divided into semesters. You do not get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.
10: Television is NOT real life. In real life, people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.”
