During twenty years of my adult life, traveling to many countries and meeting many people from different races and cultures, I have not met one person who was looking or longing for failure.
Every person I met or I would meet in the future is looking and longing for success. Nevertheless, many people misunderstand the meaning of the word success or the state of being successful.
Oxford Dictionary defines success as: “Achievement of a desired end or fame, wealth or having a social position.” Encyclopedia Britannica defines it as: “Favorable or desired outcome; the attainment of wealth, favor, or eminence.”
Many people believe that success is being rich. No doubt that money (nowadays) is as important as Oxygen, but it is only one component. Moreover, I remind those people that money can buy a wonderful, amazing and the most expensive bedroom, but not a good night sleep. To be a success, our life must contain many other things that cannot be missed or ignored.
I would agree with Deepak Shobra, Dr. Wayne Dyer and others on the definition of success. Success is living life the way you want and desire including having a healthy body, sustainability and growth, freedom, fulfilling relationships, emotional and psychological stability, hope, enthusiasm and love for life, a sense of well being, peace of mind and material wealth.
Money is important, but it is not everything. There is no point having a lot of money without being healthy enough to enjoy it. What would the money do without freedom? What would the money do without family, friends and good social relationships? What would the money do without peace of mind, hope and personal growth?
Mistakenly, one might say; “I need money.” The truth is that no one needs money. There is a difference between “Wants” and “Needs”. The truth is that money by itself is of no value. No one would eat, drink, dress, drive or live in the money. We want money to get the things that we truly need.
However, no one can enjoy life and reach a state of a successful life without money. There is a question that always arise in the mind of almost every individual; how to get more money?
There are many ways to get money, some are ethical and some are unethical. The unethical ways - as known- are many, but they will always end up with putting the person in the wrong side, either by the leading authorities or by society.
There also few ethical ways to get money, and the most effective and efficient way that works, is to have a personal development plan.
Repeatedly, we hear people say that if they have money they would do this and do that. This way of philosophy will not work; it should be the other way round. We have to be before we can do, and do before we have.
The great philosopher and thinker Jim Rohn concludes a statement which is an absolute fact. It means that success is like a butterfly, which is very hard to catch. We have to be attractive enough to attract success to our lives. He said: “Success is something you attract by the person you become.”
Without having a personal development plan, an individual would not get any better; therefore, will not have a better personality, income or lifestyle.
In order to have better, we have to become better, and to get the best out of life, we have to give our best into life.
We cannot keep in having the same self concept, philosophy and attitude, and keep on doing the same things and expecting different results. That is the exact definition of insanity.
To be a success, an individual must find his/her weaknesses and shortcomings and have the courage and the will power to change to get better results.
Putting in mind, that we have the serenity to accept the things we cannot change and we have the courage, wisdom and power to change the things that we can change.
Finally, I conclude this article with the best explanation I have ever read about success. It is what Robert Stevenson, the author of Treasure Island, said. He said:
“Man is a success who lived well, laughed often, and loved much, who has gain the respect of intelligent men and the love of children, who has filled his niche and accomplished his tasks, who leaves the world better than he found it, whether by improved poppy, a perfect poem, or a rescued soul, who never lacked appreciation of earth’s beauty or failed to express it, who looked for the best in others and gave the best he had.”
