LANGUAGES are systematic, coherent and meaningful arrangements of various symbols and rules used by people to enable them to communicate.
Language is the essential tool needed by people to obtain their desired needs and to be acquainted with their and other people’s past and contemporary experience, while living in a society.
Considering the importance of being bilingual or trilingual in our society, we will realize the role played by being so in the ideal development of our human capital. Therefore, it is important to study other languages and use them effectively.
Studying and speaking English is the first need of today’s literacy. English is the one and only global language. It had spread all over the world, and we can hardly find a country, which does not use it, regardless of its civilization rank.
It is the language used to connect nations culturally, socially and politically. It is the language used for numerous books and references for all science’s majors and fields, since the majority of scientists and educators around the world are native English speakers.
Moreover, it is the computer and the internet-accepted language; therefore, it is important for our society to study and speak English fluently, in order to cope and keep up with the rapid, wide and continuous scientific, technological and social development.
The student who did not take studying English during school time seriously, will face various difficulties in higher education institutions. Not only that the majority of the subjects are taught in English, but also references and resources are written in English.
Consequently, the student will be forced either to re-study English, change his/her subject or in some cases to leave the college or the university.
Our local institutions’ students, who did not take this matter into consideration before their higher education, will find themselves weak and unable to cope with other students who are English literates. They will need more time and effort and that would not keep them at the same level with the English literates. English is a comprehensive, deep and rich language, and it cannot be taught in a short time.
Students, who are able to speak English, have a better chance of the ability to continue their higher education abroad in a country of their choice. It is easy for them to communicate with others using this global language.
Regarding our working life, English literacy becomes more important than ever. Many of our local organizations nowadays require it as a primary condition for getting a job, since it is the language that is formally used in intercommunication, documents and prose.
Tourists, who visited this part of the world, have been finding that Sabah is a huge, amazing resort. It is enriched with a wonderful and appreciated hospitality.
They will keep coming back. English is the only language that enables them to communicate with us; therefore, it is important to study and capture this communication tool to improve and to add value to our tourism industry.
Furthermore, English literacy is the key that enables individuals to gain self-improvement knowledge, data and information in the life-long learning process. It is the key that opens the door to the world’s great and precious literature written by contemporary and past prominent and informative scholars.
However, there are many obstacles participate in reducing the motivation of studying English. These obstacles are many and various, and they differ from situation to situation, such as psychological, managerial, technical, and financial obstacles and many more.
In order to conquer these obstacles, students have to be motivated to learn by breaking the fear and shyness shields. They have to prepare their lessons in advance, create new ideas, and collaborate and practice with their teachers, friends and families, since teaching alone is not enough to capture the language.
Teachers have to be patient, remind and explain the importance of studying English to the students, use modern teaching techniques, methodologies and equipment, create a liking of the subject, ensure an enjoyable teaching environment in the class, encourage, motivate and support the improvement of students’ interpersonal skills, and link the subjects to the students’ life experience.
English is not just a subject that contains grammar and vocabulary. It is more comprehensive than that, it is the global communication tool, that is gained and obtained by motivating, studying and practicing, and it is an intellectual skill that needs time, effort and patience.
Finally, let us study this important language, capture it, practice it, use it, and work together, hand in hand, in order to help ourselves; not only to achieve our vision of being an educated and fully developed country, but also to make others wish to be part of this great, harmonious, and hospitable society.
