The Imperative Need for a Change
In his speech on the 15th of this month, our Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said, “It takes great effort to transform the nation into a developed and high-income nation with inclusive and sustainable development spearheaded by the private sector as well as focusing on the well-being of the people”. Urging people to change their mindset and work style in order to achieve this objective, his Excellency also said, “The choice before us is clear. Change is not an option, it is imperative. We must change or we will have the risk of being left behind”. He also added, “We want to build a nation where every one will be able to enjoy the benefits of development. We want a Malaysia where everyone can attain success through hard work”.

Every rational person would agree with his Excellency about the urgent need for the change of our mindset, thought, attitude, skills, performance, and accountability.    The world has changed and its continuous unpredictable rapid change is reality, and it is a permanent state. It is the innovation, technology, inventing and the speedy development era, which is different and distinct from any other era in our recorded history. We live in the twenty-first century. This means we have to live, practice, learn, think, and perform as the 21st century requires. It is the century of a continuous explosion of technologies’ inventions and implementations and a global economy that makes the challenges we face today totally different from those that had been before. It is the century of machines, computers, and electronics where many human jobs have been vanishing, and no industry is exceptional. In other words, in the near future,     unless you are an irreplaceable person, you probably be replaced by an RM 1000 microprocessor.

Now, his Excellency, his respected cabinet or the entire respected government would not be able to achieve these sublime objectives alone. Nation means people, and it takes the full cooperation and the effort of every individual in this country to achieve these sublime objectives. His Excellency was telling me, you, and every individual living under the sky of this country that the country is in need for us to be knowledgeable, skilled, committed, loyal, innovative, talented, passionate, top performers, and have the right mindset and positive mental attitude.

In addition, we have to understand that we are responsible for our success; Malaysia does not owe us a living. Moreover, every individual in this great country must understand that a better job, a better income, a better life-style, a better society, and a better Malaysia begin with a better individual. Do not you believe that if we have the best products the entire world will buy from us? Do not you believe that if we have the best service and knowledge the entire world will deal with us? How can we be in such status if we are not knowledgeable, skilled, committed, loyal, innovative, talented, passionate, and top performers? Therefore, our government (and we are lucky - Malaysia is one of the few countries that doing so) is spending a lot of money and effort in creating, focusing, fostering and implementing continuous training programs and campaigns to increase and improve the knowledge and skills of individuals. The government supports organizations and individuals continuously with fund, ideas, trainers, and much other free service. Still, surprisingly, many people and organizations are hesitant or even refuse to take this unique and great opportunity.

The government is also doing its best in promoting the country and encouraging the well-established and strong foreign organizations to bring their business into the country. This - with no doubt - will improve the economy and brings benefits for organizations and for almost every individual, except for those who are not ready for competition, not committed to the necessary change, and those who are not contributing.  However, you do not have to worry about how much you should contribute, as long as you just contribute, which is one of our spiritual needs as humans. Regardless of your age, gender, race, religion, financial situation, career, title or your position in life you are able and capable of contribution. Nevertheless, “If you cannot be the sun, be a star; if you cannot be a highway, be a trail; it is not by size you win or fail; just be the BEST of what you are”.

The only way to be prepared and to be able to surf during the unpredictable high waves is that we have to change.  We have to start making adjustments and a change progress and we must actually get started. We must be able to put extra energy into ourselves and be able to improve in every aspect of our life; in sports, business, life-style, and relationships. We cannot keep on doing what we have always been doing and expecting to have a better results or to win in this critical and rapidly changed world; this is the definition of insanity. However, when it comes to change, there are three choices to be considered.  The first is that we wait for things to change then respond or react (response and reaction are different) to these changes, and that reaction or response - in most cases - will be too late to be effective. Dwight D. Eisenhower said, “Neither a wise man nor a brave man lies down on the tracks of history to wait for the train of the future to run over him”.  The second is that we anticipate that things will change then be prepared and get ready before they happen then react or respond to them, and that is always accompanied with stressful uncertainty. The third is that we actively participate in the necessary change needed in us - as everything around us is changing, cope with these changes, predict other changes and participate in creating our future, and that will make the big impact and difference in our life.

We are not in a strong position to change situations and circumstances around us; thus, we are challenged and forced to change ourselves. Zig Ziglar said, “You cannot tailor-make the situations in life but you can tailor-make your attitude to fit those situations”.
It is possible but it is hard, and we have to do a lot of hard work mentally and physically, and that work is really difficult. Arnold Bennett said, “Any change, even a change for the better, is always accompanied by drawbacks and discomforts”. It is difficult because it requires aspiration and commitment and it does not have a holiday or time-off at all. Changing ourselves is a 24-hour job.
Sometimes we may have to face some difficulties and setbacks, but still we have to do it. If we do not, who else will? It is our responsibility and our duty put on our shoulders, and no other nation would carry them for us; greatness is never given, it must be earned.
However, it does not count what difficulties, setbacks and conditions we face in our lives, no matter what these conditions are, what matters is how do we meet these conditions and difficulties.

If we have the intention and the desire to change, the change will happen. It will happen to those who need it and implement it, not to those who are just reading or talking about it. Change will happen to those who are able to help themselves to be always motivated, willing to learn, and create remarkable usable ideas and strategies that help them and the society to succeed in this unpredictable time.

Change will happen to those who surround themselves with positive people and provide themselves with whatever necessary support that will enable them to unleash their talents and greatness. There is a new psychological term called “Relational illness”. Some people are negative and will always poison our thought, make us feel down and influence us to be in the loosing side.    Mark Twain said, "Keep away from small people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you too can become great".

David McClelland, Harvard University professor of psychology, who was recognized internationally for his expertise on human motivation and entrepreneurship, and taught and researched for 57 years, had conducted a massive research. Thereby, he found that, “No matter how much attitude training a person receives, his/her attitude, to a large degree, is determined by the people he or she is associated with”.

No one can turn the time back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a different ending. Start today and find new tools to challenge your thinking and prepare yourself well to be unique, different, and distinct and reach a new level of accomplishments.

Capitalize and invest your effort in developing you, commit to change, and have the right mental attitude, which will enable you to increase your potential and self-confidence and maximize the utilization of the abilities that you have.

There is a quote in this regard that I like. The author of this quote is unknown, but it commonly misattributed to Charles Darwin. “It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.”  Our only security for this age, which we are living and for the future is our ability to change.

Hence, I humbly urge every individual to decide and promise him/herself that, “I declare and promise that I will keep all these in mind, and work hard on myself to be the person I want to be. I also promise that I will not hesitate to play a role in helping myself, my family, my organization, my society, and my country to be amongst the best countries in the world”.
