Even though the modern performance appraisal system started as a formal management procedure just sixty years ago, it is a very ancient practice and is considered one of the oldest practices known to man. Performance appraisal is a method of judging an employee's worth to the organization.
A well-designed and properly managed performance appraisal is inevitable and important for any organization because of its contribution to the performance management process and its impact on productivity, job satisfaction, retention, and organizational commitment. In addition, it enables the organization to be aware of what the individual is doing and to understand each employee's abilities, competencies, and enables individuals to be aware that their contributions are valued.
Many employees, however, see the performance appraisal as just a performance checking system; they believe that it is a threat, especially if the employee has any shortcomings. Thomas F. Patterson, the Associate Professor and the Chairman of
Vocational Education and Technology Department in the University of Vermont-Burlington said, “Probably no other organizational function strikes as much terror in the hearts of extension agents as the annual job evaluation or performance appraisal”.
The reason for all these is that the organization’s appraisal system is poor and it does not appear to be working. It is the absence of a carefully structured, well- designed appraisal system, where people tend to judge the work performance of others informally and arbitrarily.
This training course is designed so that managers, supervisors and team leaders understand the 'WHATs' and 'HOWs' of conducting a well-designed and properly managed performance appraisal.
